چکیده
Abstract Investigations of variations and causes near-surface wind speed (NWS) further understanding the atmospheric changes improve ability climate analysis projections. NWS varies on multiple temporal scales; however, centennial-scale variability in associated over China remains unknown. In this study, we employ European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) twentieth century reanalysis (ERA-20C) to study from 1900–2010. Meanwhile, a forward stepwise regression algorithm is used reveal relationships between large-scale ocean-atmosphere circulations. The results show three unique periods annual mean displayed decreasing trend -0.87% decade -1 -11.75% 1900–1925 1957–2010, respectively, which were caused by decreases days with strong winds, trends -6.64 -4.66 , respectively. showed an upward 55.47% 1926–1956, was increases moderate (0.43 ) winds (23.55 ). reconstructed speeds based matched well original speeds; therefore, decadal at mainly induced circulations, total explanation power 66%. strongest found winter (74%), weakest summer (46%).

Mesoscale Near-Surface Wind Speed Variability Mapping with Synthetic Aperture Radar
Operationally-significant wind speed variability is often observed within synthetic aperture radar-derived wind speed (SDWS) images of the sea surface. This paper is meant as a first step towards automated distinguishing of meteorological phenomena responsible for such variability. In doing so, the research presented in this paper tests feature extraction and pixel aggregation techniques focuse...
متن کاملCentennial-scale variability of the Southern Hemisphere westerly wind belt in the eastern Pacific over the past two millennia
We present the first high-resolution (sub-annual) dust particle data set from West Antarctica, developed from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) Divide deep ice core (79.468 S, 112.086 W), and use it to reconstruct changes in atmospheric circulation over the past 2400 years. We find a background dust flux of ∼ 4 mg m−2 year−1 and a mode particle size of 5–8 μm diameter. Through comparing the W...
متن کاملObserved Coherent Trends of Surface and Upper-Air Wind Speed over China since 1960
Previous studies indicated that surface wind speed over China declined during past decades, and several explanations exist in the literature. This study presents long-term (1960–2009) changes of both surface and upper-air wind speeds over China and addresses observed evidence to interpret these changes. It is found that surface wind over China underwent a three-phase change over the past 50 yr:...
متن کاملWind speed climatology and trends for Australia, 1975–2006: Capturing the stilling phenomenon and comparison with near-surface reanalysis output
[1] Near-surface wind speeds (u) measured by terrestrial anemometers show declines (a ‘stilling’) at a range of midlatitude sites, but two gridded u datasets (a NCEP/NCAR reanalysis output and a surface-pressure-based u model) have not reproduced the stilling observed at Australian stations. We developed Australia-wide 0.01 resolution daily u grids by interpolating measurements from an expanded...
متن کاملHigh Spatial Resolution Simulation of Annual Wind Energy Yield Using Near-Surface Wind Speed Time Series
In this paper a methodology is presented that can be used to model the annual wind energy yield (AEYmod) on a high spatial resolution (50 m ˆ 50 m) grid based on long-term (1979–2010) near-surface wind speed (US) time series measured at 58 stations of the German Weather Service (DWD). The study area for which AEYmod is quantified is the German federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. Comparability ...
